The American Violet Society is very pleased to be able to announce the addition of the following new violets to the Viola Registry: |

‘Annie’ - A chance seedling of Viola odorata
grown by Clive Groves of England. Bright, rose-pink (70A RHS colour
chart) flowers (and spurs) are of standard shape and medium/small (2cm)
in size. They are highly scented and borne on medium/short (6-9 cm),
light green stems of medium thickness. Has medium/light green,
heart-shaped/round leaves and a low/medium spreading growth habit.
Introduced in 2002. Won Silver Medal at the 1st International Violet
Contest / 7th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004,
in Toulouse, France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de
la Violette, France. |

‘Becky Groves’ - A chance seedling of Viola odorata
(possibly ‘Lydia Groves’?) grown by Clive Groves of
England. Medium size blooms are pale/mid pink (darker than 'Mme
Armandine Pages') and unusually splashed with a carmine centre to
flower, top 2 petals(67A centre), (65B outer) rose pink veins, back of
petals rose pink, spur rose pink(57D). Flowers are borne on pale green,
medium thick, 8cm long stems. Heart shaped, medium green leaves grow on
the mounding, medium vigorous plant. Introduced in 2000. First
exhibited during the 1st International Violet Contest / 7th
International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004, in Toulouse,
France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de la Violette,

‘Camille’ - A chance seedling of Viola odorata
‘Rosea’ grown by Yann Duflot of France. Flowers are single,
greyish-purple, round, medium size, blooming from early October to
April. Medium size plant with quite compact, bushy growth habit and
short runners (stolons). Leaves are fresh green, smooth and dull. First
exhibited during the 1st International Violet Contest / 7th
International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004, in Toulouse,
France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de la Violette,
France. |

‘Carol’ - A chance seedling of Viola odorata
grown by Clive Groves of England. Large, scented, clear pink flowers
(68D on the RHS flower chart), found on medium length stems.
Heart-shaped green leaves also on medium length stems. Moderately
vigorous, mounded growth. Introduced in 2007. First exhibited during
the 2nd International Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la
Violette, France. This contest was part of the 8th International Violet
Meeting, held in February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária
de Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Carol Lockton’ - A chance seedling of Viola odorata
‘Opera’ grown by Clive Groves of England. Large flowers
with a wide face and distinctive mid mauve/blue colour (94B of the RHS
colour chart). The spur is mauve in colour and often paler than the
flowers. Flowers are borne on medium length stems and have good scent.
Heart shaped, green leaves are found on medium vigorous plant with a
mound forming growth habit. First exhibited during the 2nd
International Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la Violette,
France. This contest was part of the 8th International Violet Meeting,
held in February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária de
Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Charles Winston Groves’ - A seedling from Viola odorata ‘Lees Peachy Pink’ pollinated by Viola odorata
‘John Raddenbury’, grown by Clive Groves of England. Large
scented flowers with petals that are characteristically pointed at
their tips. White with an overlay of pale mauve, which follow the veins
of the petals. Flowers are found on medium length stems and have purple
spurs. Heart shaped, green leaves have a medium matt finish, (because
of the fine hairs on the surface) and are found on long stems. Growth
pattern is vigorous, upright and mounded. Introduced in 2007. First
exhibited during the 2nd International Violet Contest organised by Les
Amis de la Violette, France. This contest was part of the 8th
International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2007 at the Escola
Superior Agrária de Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Diana Groves’ - A seedling of Viola odorata ‘Clive Groves’ pollinated by Viola odorata
‘Lydia Groves’ grown by Clive Groves of England. Flowers
are standard shape (with bottom two petals turned in) and are claret
purple, (78A -72a of the RHS Colour chart) with spurs the same. They
are borne on 8cm long, purplish, medium thick stems. Early blooms have
best quality and colour. Heart shaped, mid-green leaves grow on the
medium mounding plant. Won Gold Medal at the 1st International Violet
Contest / 7th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004,
in Toulouse, France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de
la Violette, France. |

‘Ellie’ - A seedling of Viola odorata
‘Perky’, grown by Clive Groves of England. The medium size,
scented flowers are an unusual dusky pink, with a white narrow margin
to each petal. Heart shaped, mid green, medium size leaves grow on the
medium length stems, of this moderately vigorous, mound forming plant.
Introduced in 2007. Exhibited at the 2nd International Violet Contest
organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France. This contest was part of
the 8th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2007 at the
Escola Superior Agrária de Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Joyce Mary Paul’ - A seedling of Viola
‘Susan Chilcott’ grown by Steven Paul of England and
registered by Clive Groves (also of England). This violet is a
‘Governor Herrick’ type (sororia / odorata hybrid) being
descended from ‘Governor Herrick’ through ‘Susan
Chilcott’. The flowers are round, very large, and of true violet
colour (83Aof the RHS colour chart) on long fleshy stems. The flowers
are earlier than its parent and its scent (although still light) is
stronger than its parent. Vigorous growth of dark-green, healthy
foliage with a smooth, shiny surface is retained better in the winter
than its parent. Introduced in 2007. Exhibited at the 2nd International
Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France. This
contest was part of the 8th International Violet Meeting, held in
February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária de
Béjà, Portugal. |

‘La Valade’ - A seedling of Viola odorata
‘Rosea’ grown by Yann Duflot of France. Flowers are single,
white, splashed with pink. The flower shape has more height than width.
The plant has a compact, bushy growth habit with short runners
(stolons). The leaves are fresh green, smooth and dull. First exhibited
during the 1st International Violet Contest / 7th International Violet
Meeting, held in February of 2004, in Toulouse, France. Meeting and
contest were organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France. |

‘Lydia's Legacy’ - A sport of Viola odorata
‘Lydia Groves’ discovered by Clive Groves of England. The
scented, medium size flowers are bright cerise pink, sometimes with a
purple blotch on the petals. Medium size, mid to dark green, heart
shaped leaves on a medium vigorous plant with mounded growth habit.
Introduced in 1997. First exhibited during the 1st International Violet
Contest / 7th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004,
in Toulouse, France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de
la Violette, France. |

‘Marie Rose’ - A seedling of Viola odorata
‘Princess of Wales’ selected by Pierre Barandou of France
and registered by Nathalie Casbas (also of France). This seedling with
large, dark-pink flowers had been grown by Nathalie for several years
without name. Pierre agreed that Nathalie name it after her grand
mother. First exhibited during the 1st International Violet Contest /
7th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004, in
Toulouse, France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de la
Violette, France. |

‘Mulberry’ - A seedling of Viola odorata
grown by Clive Groves of England. Medium/large, scented flowers the
colour of squashed mulberry fruits (70A - RHS colour chart). Spur is
the same colour. Heart-shaped, matte green leaves. Relatively vigorous,
mounded growth. Introduced in 2007. First exhibited during the 2nd
International Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la Violette,
France. This contest was part of the 8th International Violet Meeting,
held in February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária de
Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Parchment’ - A seedling of Viola odorata
grown by Clive Groves of England. Dull purple flowers (N77C of the RHS
colour chart), which turn to an unusual parchment brown colour at
maturity. Scented. Spur same colour as the flower. Medium length stems.
Medium vigour, mounded habit. Introduced in 2007. Won Gold Medal at the
2nd International Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la Violette,
France. This contest was part of the 8th International Violet Meeting,
held in February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária de
Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Poussières d'Etoiles’ - A sport of Viola odorata
"Reid’s Crimson Carpet” discovered by Nathalie Casbas of
France. Pink flowers of quite big size. Freckled with the darker color
of it's sport parent (Reid's crimson carpet). Waved petals like a
cowboy hat. Habit like a traditional odorata. Discovered in 2003. First
exhibited during the 2nd International Violet Contest organised by Les
Amis de la Violette, France. This contest was part of the 8th
International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2007 at the Escola
Superior Agrária de Béjà, Portugal. English name
translation – ‘Star Dust’. |

‘Roxy’ - A seedling of Viola odorata
grown by Rossana Zampieri of Italy. The flower are white, flushed and
streaked with dark purple. Deep-purple lines on the lower petals.
Petals on reverse are dark. Strongly scented. Spreading growth habit,
many runners. Leaves are very pubescent. Exhibited during the 2nd
International Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la Violette,
France. This contest was part of the 8th International Violet Meeting,
held in February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária de
Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Susan Chilcott’ - A seedling of Viola
‘Governor Herrick’ selected by Steven Paul of England, and
registered by Clive Groves (also of England). Flowers are large, round,
lightly-scented and true violet colour (83A - RHS colour). Spur is the
same colour. Medium/long, thick and fleshy stems. Heart-shaped, glossy
leaves. Resilient and pest free with short, thickened stolons.
Introduced in 2007. First exhibited during the 2nd Int Violet Contest
organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France. This contest was part of
the 8th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2007 at the
Escola Superior Agrária de Béjà, Portugal. |

‘Zampieri’ - A sport of Viola odorata
‘Mrs R.Barton’ discovered by Rossana Zampieri of Italy. The
flower is lilac-blue with a white centre, fragrant, long stemmed and
produced in autumn and spring. Upright growth habit, very hardy. Leaves
cordate, slightly hairy. Won Silver Medal at the 2nd International
Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France. This
contest was part of the 8th International Violet Meeting, held in
February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária de
Béjà, Portugal. |
