Striations: Dark Violet

Form: Stemless, Uncut Leaves

Seeds: Dark Olive To Nearly Black.

Habitat: Moist Shady Locations, Skunk cabbage Meadows.

Peak Bloom: April - June

Similar Species: Viola sororia

Description:  
Viola cucullata has violet blooms with deeply violet upper and lateral petals,  The veined lower petal has a white base and dark violet veins.  The lateral petals are heavily bearded.  Leaves vary from ovate to heart or kidney-shaped.  The margins are crenate and have acute or tapering tips. This species occurs almost exclusively in nearly water saturated soil.
